An image-producing device has a photoreceptor (12) and a developing unit (16) arranged in its vicinity. A precharger (28) is arranged upstream of the developing unit (16) in such a manner that it is in contact with the surface of the photoreceptor (12). A developing bias voltage is applied to a developing sleeve (22) and a charging voltage to the precharger (28). The photoreceptor (12) which is charged by the precharger (12) subsequently touches a magnetic brush (34) which is formed by a developer (18) which is mixed from insulating toner and semiconductive magnetic carrier, as a result of which the photoreceptor (12) is again charged with the developing bias voltage via the semiconductive magnetic carrier. <IMAGE>
