A feed device intended for transporting material and/or workpieces on intermittent production machines possesses two gripper rails which extend parallel and at a distance from one another in the feed direction and which are in each case, by means of an individual drive, movable jointly to and fro in the feed direction, transversely thereto synchronously in opposition in a horizontal plane and jointly up and down in a vertical direction. The individual drives for the transverse and lifting movements perpendicular to the feed direction each comprise a spindle drive with at least one drive spindle operatively connected to a drive motor and spindle nuts which are received on these spindles and from which the gripper rail movements are derived.
