The invention relates to a high-performance brake for vehicles, in particular rail vehicles, which dissipates heat outwards, is cooled directly by the airstream produced by travelling, and is very light, friction linings, which are preferably exchangeable, being fitted on one or both sides of the rotating part and the associated stationary brake elements being equipped with an actuating means for pressing them against the friction linings. Provision is made according to the invention for the friction linings to occupy only a fraction, preferably less than 50%, of the friction area available over the entire circumference and for the stationary parts to be designed as a solid disc or solid ring disc with a continuous circular-ring area as friction area.
