The invention relates to a process for producing membranes which comprise zeolite molecular sieve crystals in a metal layer. The zeolite-metal composite can be used as a free foil, but also fixed to a porous support. Such membranes enable the separation of fluid mixtures by diffusion, permeation or pervaporation. Since the membrane also has a high thermal stability and chemical resistance, it can be used at high temperatures as a reactive catalyst membrane. Areas of application are selective mass-separation processes for gaseous (permeation) and liquid (pervaporation) mixtures. At elevated temperature, depending on the catalytic properties of the zeolite molecular sieve crystals included, shape-selective catalytic reactions proceed. Furthermore, the membranes can be used in chemical sensors, in which case only certain components of a product mixture can pass to the detector. The development of novel high-temperature membranes based on zeolite molecular sieves in a metal matrix is also intended to open up novel development possibilities in reaction technology and environmental technology in competition with thermal separation methods.
