A discharge lamp ignition apparatus is provided, having a prediction device (73) for predicting the final discharge lamp voltage of a discharge lamp (12), and having a discharge lamp control device (7), containing a discharge lamp voltage/current assignment characteristic (72) for determining the current passed to the discharge lamp by means of the voltage which is applied to the said discharge lamp in order to carry out the ignition control by using a value which is predicted by the prediction device. As a result of this, it is possible to pass the optimum power to the discharge lamp, corresponding to a change in the final discharge lamp voltage resulting from the quality or the operating time, and to reduce the time required for the luminous flux to stabilise. <IMAGE>
