Heating apparatuses known hitherto, in particular road-surface burners in road construction, possess only a thin, soft insulating layer for checking heat losses. The new device produces a greater thermal yield in the direction of the surface to be exposed to radiation, owing to suitable insulating measures. To avoid heat losses opposite to the desired radiation direction, or keep them as low as possible, a self-supporting and heat-resistant shaped body, preferably made of ceramic fibre, is attached to the side lying opposite the radiation direction of the infrared radiators, into which shaped body are fitted reflectors and radiation devices in a manner accurate to shape.
