A seat cushion system (100) that reduces the vertical impact to the seat occupant within the space and cost constraints of existing seat support structures. In one embodiment, the seat cushion employs a series of layers (101, 102, 103, 106) of varying density and lateral displacement foams with a rigid or semi-rigid material (104) within the cushion. Each layer of foam can change in both density and lateral displacement depending on the volumetric space available. Another embodiment (137) demonstrates how only two layers (132, 133) of differing densities and lateral displacement can greatly reduce the impact force from vertical thrust.
