A ball game recreational or training device comprises a reel (1) adapted to be held in a user's hand. A tether (3) such as a braided rope is wound on the reel (1), and a ball (5), eg a soccer ball, is secured to the free end of the tether (3). The reel (1) is spring-loaded for automatic rewinding of the tether (3), and is provided with stop means (7) for preventing or permitting unwinding of the tether (3).
