In a vehicle transmission, a controlled-slip bridging clutch 12 in a torque converter 10 is provided with a torsion damper 35 which has a stop moment less than the rated torque of the vehicle engine. The damper thus only absorbs vibration at low torques, the clutch 12 slipping to accommodate vibration and shocks at higher torques. The damper 35 may have two ranges of operation. The clutch slip is controlled in dependence on such factors as throttle opening, engine load, turbine speed and pump speed. <IMAGE> |
