A process monitor for assessment of bending loads encountered during mechanical handling of agricultural and manufactured products with a length to diameter ratio greater than 2:1, for example sugar beet, has a core 12, and adjacent to the surface piezo-electric plastic material cables 14 wound in a pattern sensitive to the particular processing conditions being monitored. The deflections sustained by the envelope 20 of the process monitor are used to identify situations where bending loads occur which if applied to a real product would cause damage. After calibration against a real product the process monitor is included in a batch of products to be processed. The deflections experienced during handling, especially those above a damaging threshold level, are monitored and logged within the process monitor. Rapid data analysis equipment either external to or contained within the process monitor is used to locate when and where the potentially damaging bending loads occur. <IMAGE> |
