PURPOSE:To connect indoor units of different types to a common communication line and set the types of the indoor units by a method wherein each indoor units is equipped with a microcomputer which writes a type code contained in communication data into a memory when a self-address and corresponding with each other to find coincidence therein, and performs controls that match with the type code. CONSTITUTION:Two or more indoor units A11, A12, A21 and A22 each equipped with a microcomputer a3 are connected to a common communication line 1. A self-address that indicates the source of transmission is compared with corresponding addresses of outdoor units A13 and A23 that are set by a corresponding outdoor unit setting switch a4. When the addresses coincide with each other, the microcomputer a3 writes the type code contained in communication data into a nonvolatile memory a5 and hereafter performs controls that match with type code. When the types are set at the time of installation in the case the indoor units A11, A12, A21 and A22 are common, the types can be automatically set according to the communication data sent from the outdoor units A13 and A23 after a power source is turned on.
