PURPOSE: To introduce a uniform tilted horizontal alignment nearly parallel with a substrate to liquid crystals. CONSTITUTION: The substrate is moved through a sputtering target and a silica layer 44 is deposited by evaporation on this substrate 42 by inline magnetron sputtering and thereafter, the silica coated substrate is treated with the alcohol, for example, 2-phenyl ethanol, selected from either of two alcohol groups consisting of (1) alcohol having an arom. cyclic structure at one end of an aliphat. chain, having a hydroxyl group at multiple ends and having or not having at least one ether groups in the chain and (2) an aliphat. chain having the hydroxyl group at one end and having at least one ether bond in the chain. Further, the substrate treated with the alcohol is covered with a liquid crystal layer. A tilt angle from about 0.5 to 4 deg. measured parallel with the surface of the substrate is introduced to the directs of the liquid crystals of this method. |
