PURPOSE: To automatically perform the tuning and adaptation of a compensating means against the variation of the distance of a transmission line and chirping of a laser, where a compensator is tuned to compensate for the distortion of analog optical signals generated from a laser and transmitted through a fiber network by the dispersion of fibers corresponding to the chirping of the laser and transmitting distance. CONSTITUTION: A compensator is provided with an automatic distance measuring instrument R which outputs a resultant signal M indicating the transmitting distance of a fiber and a processing circuit PC which outputs a tuning signal V for a tunable compensating means in response to the resultant signal MS and the chirping value of a laser. The processing circuit PC incorporates a table based on the preset chirping value of the laser for converting the prefixed characteristic value of the resultant signal MS into a tuning signal V.
