The invention relates to a fuel injection system for an internal combustion engine in which a high pressure pump delivers fuel into a common feed line provided for solenoid-controlled injection nozzles and acting as pressure reservoir, with a pump working chamber defined by a pump cylinder and a pump piston, into which chamber a low pressure-side fuel admission line opens, which is connected by way of a control line, with the insertion of a solenoid valve, to a high pressure line emerging from the pump working chamber and leading to the feed line and having a non-return valve, the high pressure line being provided with a bypass bypassing the non-return valve, which bypass can be connected to the pump working chamber by way of a flow connection arranged in the pump piston and, with the solenoid valve open, also to the low pressure side by way of the control line.
