<p>A distiller (10) for producing potable water employs a metal boiler tray (45) having a cover member (51) in which there is an inlet (61) for raw water and which together form a steam chamber (105) having an outlet (58) for steam. The boiler tray (45) bottom has a plurality of steps including a highest (69), an intermediate (71), and a lowest level step (73) which are all covered with water at the beginning of a distillation cycle. The temperature of the highest level step (69) is monitored with a sensor (128). A rise in the temperature of the highest level step (69) by a predetermined amount above the boiling temperature of water indicates that the highest (69) and intermediate (71) steps have become dry. This results in a signal to a controller (30) to open a valve (64) and admit replenishment raw water whose amount is dependent on valve open time.</p> |
