The invention relates to a boom for a sailing boat, comprising: an elongate structure which delimits a cavity extending in the longitudinal direction; a slot which extends in the longitudinal direction on the top side thereof; and a winding member, which can be driven in rotation by drive means and extends in the longitudinal direction in the cavity, for winding up and unwinding a sail which can be moved through the slot, characterized in that the slot can be closed off by closure means which prevent the sail from being unwound by acting on a sail slat which is held in the sail and is too wide to pass the closure means when they are active but is narrow enough to pass through the slot via the closure means when they are inactive. With a structure of this nature, it is possible to relieve the load on the winding structure during use.
