Surgical instrument

A surgical instrument (1) is intended to perform operations inside the body. It is conventionally equipped with a handle (2), a shaft and an instrument member (9). The surgical instrument simultaneously serves as a carrier for means for transmitting light and/or images and/or light energy. For this purpose, a pipe (7) which surrounds the shaft and preferably has fibres located in its wall or similar transmission lines may be provided on the shaft member between the handle (2) and the instrument member (9). The fibres terminate at the distal region of the shaft or the instrument member, so that illumination and/or observation is possible directly at the operating field (Figure 1).
