In the event of coding a plurality of signals which are not independent of one another, the selection of the suitable type of coding is made as a function of a degree of similarity. In accordance with one aspect of the invention, a selection or assessment of the actually audible spectral components is performed, based on the spectral values of the respective signals, with the use of a monitoring threshold determined by the psychoacoustic calculation, and the degree of similarity is determined, in order to select the type of coding, on the basis of the audible spectral components, selected or assessed in this way, of the at least two signals (k1, k2). In the case of a high degree of similarity, intensity stereo coding is performed, whereas otherwise the channels are coded separately.
