The invention relates to a homocinetic joint having an outer part, an inner part and torque-transmitting spherical parts which are arranged so as to be rotatable between matching grooves which are provided in pairs between the inner and outer parts and which are held by a retainer which is inserted between the outer and the inner part, with the retainer being characterised in that the retainer (5) comprises low-carbon steel containing essentially from 0.1 to 0.4 % by weight of carbon, 1.0 % by weight or less of silicon, 1.0 % by weight or less of manganese and from 0.5 to 3.0 % by weight of chromium and whose remainder is essentially iron (Fe), and which is carburised to form a carbon-rich, carburised surface layer containing 1.5 % by weight or more of carbon. If the joint is used for a homocinetic joint which is subjected to relatively great stresses owing to the fact that the joint is nowadays built so as to be more compact and lighter, the retainer is in sliding contact with the spherical parts in a state of high surface pressure, which gives high wear resistance and hot strength. <IMAGE>
