The invention proposes a drive unit for a cleaning device with adjustable brush strips which are mounted in a cylindrical inner tube and can be adjusted radially to the inside or outside by means of an outer tube piece. The drive unit has an open passage in both axial directions and can be flange-mounted on the cleaning adapter. Owing to the fact that the cleaning device is open axially in both directions and the cleaning adapter is likewise open axially in both directions, elongated threads or bolts can be cleaned simply and in a force-saving manner by the drive unit with the flange-mounted cleaning adapter being guided together over the thread of the bolt, in which case the uncleaned bolt section lies in front of the cleaning adapter and can enter it, and the cleaned bolt section can come out of the axially open end of the drive unit. Apart from reliable cleaning of especially elongated bolts and threads, the means of inducing forces in the brush cleaning adapter in an especially effective manner is obtained, irrespective of the length of the thread to be cleaned. <IMAGE>
