A conveying apparatus for seizing and conveying in each case an uppermost sheet of sheet material arranged on a stack exhibits a conveying roller (3), provided with a plurality of openings (35) and mounted on a carrying shaft (2), a drive shaft (1), for rotating the conveying roller (3), and a supply line via which air can be taken in by way of openings (35) in the conveying roller (3). The carrying shaft (2), the conveying roller (3), the drive shaft (1) and the supply line are combined to form a functional unit which has compact dimensions and a very low weight, is extremely reliable and requires hardly any maintenance. <IMAGE>
