The object of the invention is to improve the triggering of the automatic braking sequence in such a way that the driver can influence the triggering of the braking sequence. Triggering of the automatic braking sequence must nevertheless always be ensured when necessary. For this purpose the driver, by means of a control element can adjust the effective triggering threshold within a certain range. The said range is selected so that the effective threshold cannot be lowered to such an extent that the automatic braking sequence is triggered at brake pedal operating speeds normal when driving. On the other hand, the effective threshold cannot be raised to such an extent that fulfilment of the triggering criterion for the automatic braking sequence becomes impossible.
