For the particularly economical utilisation of finely divided iron-containing materials, in particular of smelter dusts even in large amounts, indeed with minimisation of the energy input, in the production of an iron melt (6) in an electric arc furnace (1), the following procedure is used: . an iron melt (6) is provided in the electric arc furnace (1), . a foam slag (9) is provided and maintained on the iron melt (6) . finely divided iron-containing materials such as smelter dusts, fine ore, iron carbide, dust from the production of directly reduced iron, scale, dried metallurgical sludges, etc., are introduced continuously or batchwise into the foam slag (9), . finely divided, carbon-containing reducing agents such as coal, coke, graphite, plastics, wood, etc. are fed continuously or batchwise into the foam slag (9) and . to provide the process heat required, finely divided, carbon-containing energy carriers are additionally introduced continuously or batchwise into the foam slag (9), . process gases and carbon-containing energy carriers which form during the reduction are largely burned within the foam slag to give CO2 and H2O and further provide the locally necessary process heat and . the course of the process is accelerated by passing gases and/or gas mixtures into the iron melt (6).

|
