This apparatus for detecting a break in a transmission line forming part of the modem includes an access (45) for sending data, an access (46) for receiving data from distant equipment, a measurer (80) of a quantity representing the correlation of the data sent with the data received and a threshold device (81) for triggering a line break alarm when this quantity exceeds a threshold value L, the said correlation relating to a limited range of samples. Application: data transmission.
