1298411 Seaming non-metallic sheet material BONDIT CORP 11 March 1970 [12 March 1969] 11599/70 B5K In apparatus for joining sheet material 1a, 1b by interfeeding a dry filamentary adhesive 8 between the materials in the areas thereof to be joined and applying heat and pressure to effect joining, the heating energy being applied to the adhesive 8 being dependent upon the rate of travel of the material 1a, 1b so that the temperature of the adhesive is substantially constant. As shown, overlapping or superimposed sheets 1a, 1b with a dry monofilament thermoplastic adhesive 8 therebetween pass between rolls 2a, 2b, electrodes 3, 4 and rolls 5a, 5b and are rewound on a reel 6. Belts 13, 14, preferably coated with polytetrafluoroethylene, pass around the rolls 2a, 5a and 2b, 5b, respectively. The electrode 3 is grounded and the electrode 4 is connected to a RF generator 10. The electrodes 3, 4 compress the sheets 1a, 1b the adhesive 8 and the belts 13, 14 with a force determined by a gap control 9. The speed of the sheets 1a 1b is determined by a motor 20 whose shaft 21 is connected to the reel 6 and, also, if desired, to the rollers 5a, 5b. The speed of the motor 20 is controlled by a controller 22 which may comprise an autotransfer whose voltage output is determined by the position of a linkage 23 connected to a foot pedal 24. The linkage 23 is connected to a controller 25 which applies the input power to the generator 10. Thus, the position of the pedal 24 determines both the speed of the motor 20 and the output power of the controller 25 so that as the motor speed increases or decreases the heating energy applied to the adhesive 8 increases or decreases to prevent under-heating or over-heating, respectively, thereof.
