PURPOSE:To obtain the subject compounds at the same time at a low cost with sufficiently high reaction speed by using a relatively inexpensive raw material, avoiding the use of a strongly corrosive acid, e.g. concentrated sulfuric acid or an alkaline substance without the need for separating the by-product and also avoiding high temperature. CONSTITUTION:Monochloroacetic acid and trichloroethylene are produced at the same time by heating 1,1,1,2-tetrachloroethane within the temperature range from 150 deg.C to 350 deg.C, preferably from 180 deg.C to 280 deg.C, using a halide or oxide of one or more kinds of elements selected from the groups Ib, II, VIb, VIIb and VIII of the Periodlc Table as catalyst in the presence of water. Iron chloride and zinc chloride are preferable as the catalyst since they have higher reaction velocities. When a molar ratio (water/raw material) is larger, a larger amount of monochloroacetic acid is obtained and reversely when the molar ratio is smaller, a larger amount of trichloroethylene is obtained. |
