The member 48 is deflected into the position shown in broken lines to engage a seating surface 60 while water is flowing through an outlet tube 46 into the cistern. Holes 64 in the member 48 provide a flow area at least as great as that of the holes 62 to ensure an adequate flow of air into the valve inlet 10 when the supply pressure falls. The valve closure member 40 is controlled by a pilot 44 coupled to the float 16 by a lever 88, link 82 and a spring clip 84. Circumferentially spaced ridges 72 guide the float on the tube 46 and prevent the collection of sediment which could hinder movement of the float. Buoyancy is provided by air trapped beneath the float which has a water chamber 74.
