When attaching to a garment material tapered stem 26 is forced through the material which is then held in the undercut 32. A tool part of which is shown as 34 is then used to 'coldwork' the stem 26 by flattening it thus gripping the garment material as shown in Fig. 2 and part of the stem is sheared by sliding cylindrical member 42 down part 38 so that a portion 50 of the stem is formed. This prevents the stem 26 from springing back into its original shape.
