PURPOSE:To efficiently obtain the subject compound useful as an intermediate for yarn processing agent, polymer cross-linking agent, deodorant, medicine, perfume, etc., by treating ethylene glycol or glycol aldehyde with an oxidoreductase or a microorganlsm containing the enzyme. CONSTITUTION:Ethylene glycol or glycol aldehyde is treated with an oxidoreductase such as alcohol oxidase and/or glycerol dehydrogenase or a microorganism containing the enzyme such as Pichia, Candida, Hansenula, Aspergillus, Penicillium, Neurospora, Acetobacter, Pseudomonas or Alcaligenes and converted into glyoxal and collected to give biochemically glyoxal useful as a synthetic intermediate for yarn processing agent, paper processing agent, cement additive, polymer cross-linking agent for starch, etc., deodorant, soil hardening agent, medicine, perfume, etc. |
