PURPOSE:To produce a polyarylene sulfide which has a high whiteness even after being heated and has a high melt viscosity. CONSTITUTION:A polyarylene sulfide is produced by reacting an alkali metal sulfide with an arom. dihalo compd. in a polar aprotic solvent under the condition that a zinc compd. in an amt. of 0.001-0.1mol based on 1mol of the metal sulfide is added to the reaction system or to the posttreatment system at any time from when the conversion of the dihalo compd. reaches 30% to the posttreatment step of the resulting polymn. slurry.
