The lateral flow is effected by horizontal baffles. The coolant flow lines, 5, are shaped by the horizontal perforated baffles, 6, alternate ones beingmounted in resilient ribs, 7, corrected to the thermal shield 3. A radial coolant flow into the fertile blanket 2 is directed from the space between the shield 3 and the blanket. Vortex inducing devices may be placed in the gap between 2 and 3. The baffles 6 may comprise annular support plates for fertile material elements and may be slotted radially to allow thermal expansion.
