A composition for topical application includes a hydroxyalkanoate derivative having structure (I), where R<1> represents H- or acyl, R<2> represents alkyl of at least 2 carbon atoms, R<3> represents H-, alkyl, substituted or interrupted alkyl or a metallic, ammonium or alkanolammonium counterion. The hydroxyalkanoate derivative penetrates deeply into the skin and undergoes cleavage by enzymes in the skin to liberate the corresponding hydroxyalkanoate which benefits skin condition. |
