PURPOSE:To obtain a novel compound which is useful as a nerve growth factor production inducer and as an antimicrobial agent from the cultured cell bodies of Hericium erinaceum belonging to the genus Hericium which belongs to the family Hydnaceae. CONSTITUTION:The compound of the formula. Molecular weight: 478; Molecular formula: C27H42O7; Solubility: soluble in chloroform, acetone, moderately soluble in ethanol, insoluble in water; Acidity: neutral; Color and appearance: colorless needle crystals; Melting point: 121-123 deg.C. This compound is obtained by culturing the mycelia of the fungus in a SGC medium at 30 deg.C for 4 weeks, extracting the mycelia with a homogeneous mixture of water with an organic solvent such as 85% ethanol, evaporating the solvent from the extract, extracting the aqueous residue with a mixture of water and an organic solvent in the liquid- liquid partition manner to separate the organic phase and subjecting the dried residue of the organic phase to silica-gel chromatography to effect fractionation. |
