PURPOSE:To obtain a metallic thin film type magnetic recording medium excellent in running performance, durability and preservability. CONSTITUTION:This magnetic recording medium has a ferromagnetic metallic thin film on the nonmagnetic substrate. A carbon film may be formed on the metallic thin film and this medium has a surface layer contg. at least one of a fluorine-contg. compd. represented by a general formula Rf-Rh-COO-(R1O)n-R2 and a fluorine-contg. compd. represented by a general formula Rf-Rh-COO-(R1O)n- R3-Rf. A corrosion inhibitor and an extreme-pressure additive may further be contained in the surface layer. In the formulae, Rf is (CF3)aCF3-a(CF2)b, 1<=a<=3, 1<=a+b<=11, 1<=n<=8, R1 is 1-4C alkylene, R2 is 2-26C alkyl or alkenyl and each of R3 and Rh is 2-14C alkylene or alkenylene. |
