MAGNETIC RECORDING MEDIUM

PURPOSE:To obtain a metallic thin film type magnetic recording medium excellent in running performance, durability and preservability. CONSTITUTION:This magnetic recording medium has a ferromagnetic metallic thin film on at least one side of the nonmagnetic substrate. A carbon film may be formed on the metallic thin film and this medium has a surface layer contg. at least one of a fluorine-contg. compd. represented by a general formula Rf-R1 and a fluorine-contg. compd. represented by a general formula Rf-R2-Rf. One or more kinds of fluorine-contg. compds. each having a polar group and a perfluoroalkyl group and a corrosion inhibitor may further be contained in the surface layer. They may be contained in the back coat layer or may be applied to coat. In the formulae, Rf is (CF3)aCF3-a(CF2)b, 1<=a<=3, 1<=a+b<=11, R1 is 8-26C alkyl or alkenyl and R2 is 2-14C alkylene or alkenylene.
