The invention relates to an audio assistance system for the prevention of breakdowns on heat engines of land, marine and air vehicles. It consists in the recording on magnetic tapes, cassettes, audio discs, computer memories or any commercially available sound media, of referenced standard noises of the operation of the engine in question. Auditory (or visual on a computer screen) comparison between the recorded standard noises listened to via the in-vehicle sound reproduction system and the operating noises of the engine to be checked makes it possible to test operation of the engine. By combining a computer with the device, professional motorists will be provided with a high-performance tool for establishing their diagnosis on breakdowns and for fine-tuning of an engine. By virtue of integration of the device in their on-board computer, luxury and competition vehicles will be permanently provided with data allowing constant "in situ" monitoring of the operation of the engine.
