The invention concerns a press (10) designed to press a liquid from materials containing it, in particular for pressing juice from grape or fruit pulp, etc. The press has a container (12) in which is disposed at least one membrane (28) made of flexible material and attached to the inside wall of the container to form a pressure-tight seal along the edge of the membrane such that the membrane (28) exerts a pressure on the liquid-containing material in the press when compressed air from an external compressed-air supply is introduced between the container wall (14) and the membrane (28). The pressing operation is carried out by repeatedly passing compressed air into the space (30) or spaces (30) between the membrane (28) and the container (12), the final pressure being increased each time, and releasing the pressure again to give a low vacuum, the liquid-containing material being turned over during each pressure-release period. A liquid ring pump connected to the space or spaces (30) is used to supply the compressed air which creates the pressure in the space or spaces (30) and to generate the vacuum in the same space or spaces. The vacuum and pressure connections on the pump can be selectively connected to the space or spaces (30) by means of control devices, such as on-off valves, shut-off valves, gate valves, etc. |
