Multimetal oxide compositions containing at least the elements antimony and phosphorus and additionally at least one of the two elements Mo, W, where part of the antimony is present as senarmontite. These compositions are suitable as catalysts for preparing methacrylic acid by catalytic gas-phase oxidation of methacrolein.
