The invention relates to an inflator for an air bag device which provides a readily adjustable ignition delay time and an onset rate. A booster tube (3) is coaxially inserted into a container (1), and an ignition cord (4) is inserted into the booster tube (3) substantially along the axis. A booster propellant (5) is filled between the ignition cord (4) and the booster tube (3), and a main propellant (6) is filled between the booster tube (3) and the container (1). A number of gas passing holes (3a) are formed in the booster tube (3). A part of the gas passing holes (3a) are closed by aluminum films (10).
