A separating and washing apparatus for cleaning shredded plastics has a liquid bath, into which the shredded plastics containing foreign materials are introduced, a stirring device, by means of which the liquid bath can be stirred, and a discharge line, through which cleaned shredded plastics can be discharged from the liquid bath in a liquid/shredded-plastics suspension. In order to increase the residence time range of the shredded plastics within the separating and washing apparatus and in order to avoid the shredded plastics being "rushed through" the separating and washing apparatus, these measures producing an improved cleaning effect of the separating and washing apparatus, the liquid bath is separated into at least two mutual separate subbaths (2, 3), of which each is assigned a stirring device (4, 5) and a recirculating circuit (8, 9), operated by means of a pump (6, 7). The shredded plastics containing foreign materials (12) are fed into the subbath (2) on the input side; the recirculating circuit (8) of the subbath (2) on the input side is connected by means of a branch line (13) to the second subbath (3), which for its part is connected by means of a branch line (14) from its recirculating circuit (9) to the discharge line (15) of the separating and washing apparatus. <IMAGE>
