The invention relates to a method and an arrangement for machining a workpiece, in particular a workpiece consisting of a hardened unmachined part, fixed centring spindles in a lathe being used on which the workpiece is arranged. The shape of the fixed centres enables a smaller force to be exerted for holding and supporting the workpiece in order to reduce the friction between the rotating workpiece and the non-rotating centres, although a maximum radial holding force is exerted in order to reduce wobble of the workpiece during the machining. A lubricant can be passed through the fixed centres in order to further reduce the friction, or an anti-friction coating can be applied to the contact surface of the centres for this purpose. The machining of the hardened parts can be numerically controlled.
