A normally open solenoid (140) actuated valve (110) includes a valve body (112) having a valve seat (130). The valve is biased open by a compression spring (152). The valve includes a double seal assembly which includes a rod (162) secured to a stem (133). A retainer (156), including a first sealing surface (168), is secured to the rod (162). A sealing member (164), longitudinally moveable along the rod (162), includes an inner valve seat (170) and a second sealing surface (128). The first sealing surface (168) contacts the inner valve seat (170) and the second sealing surface (128) contacts the valve seat (130) when the solenoid is energized. A sleeve (160) is secured about the rod (162) and positioned adjacent the sealing member (164). When the valve stem (133) is moved, the sleeve (160) contacts the sealing member (164) after movement of the stem (133) is commenced.
