This invention relates to a bread cutting machine having a slide (18) which is moved along the channel (16, 17) for the material to be cut in order to advance the bread through the plane of the cutter and having a claw (10) which is mounted on the slide so as to be pivotable about a horizontal axis and has bent prongs for holding fast the end region of the material to be cut during the cutting process. According to the invention, provision is made for a stop lever which is mounted on the pivotable part of the slide to come to rest against a stop cam (14) which is mounted in the region of the rear wall (16) of the channel for the material to be cut when the slide plate (12) reaches the vicinity of the plane of the cutting blade (13) and, as the slide is advanced further, forces the claw (10) to execute a pivot movement which causes it to emerge from the loaf of bread and release the end piece of the latter. <IMAGE>
