In order to provide a headstock for automatic wood-turning lathes, having a hollow spindle through which the elongated workpiece to be machined is fed and the protruding free end of which can be machined, the hollow spindle having a clamping device for the workpiece at the end facing the machining tools, which headstock requires short cycle times for releasing and clamping the workpiece, it is proposed that the clamping device comprises a chuck (6) which is arranged on the hollow spindle (2) to be rotatable to a limited degree about the spindle axis (7) and to be machine-drivable, the chuck (6) being able to be transferred into the closed position by mechanical rotation and, in the closed position, the hollow spindle (2) being able to be set in synchronous rotation by the rotating chuck (6), and the chuck (6) being able to be transferred into the open position, in which the workpiece is freed, by reducing the circumferential speed of the chuck (6) relative to the circumferential speed of the hollow spindle (2). <IMAGE>
