Signs, in particular for identifying the course of operational local distribution lines for gas, water, oil, cables and the like are produced according to the invention by producing the signs (1) from a laminated plate material having a coloured base layer and a covering layer of another colour, the identifications being formed by engravings penetrating through the covering layer. In consequence, signs (1) having weatherproof and permanently easy-to-read inscriptions are produced in the most simple way. <IMAGE>
