The method uses a lower transport chain and an upper plate chain (14) between which folded sheets (11) are conveyed with their leading edges (12) protruding in the direction of movement (10). Needles (17) are deployed through holes (16) in the links (15) of the plate chain at a stitching station (6). An optical barrier (1) detects the passage of the leading edge and triggers a control unit (4) in which the distribution of stitches is stored. Another detector (2) produces a pulse for each unit of angular rotation of the chain drive shaft (3). The length of the sheets is calculated from the number of pulses counted.
