One or more reactants (I) are oxidised by mixing them with an oxidant (II) in a packed bed contg. inert packing materials (III); then effecting the reaction under oxidising conditions. (I) are specifically MeOH, PhH, naphthalene, O-xylene, cumene, CH4, propylene, acrolein, H2 or NH3. (III) are (a) spherical particles of max. dia. size defined in eqn. 1; DP = 0.61Dt(VSD/VLB) - 0.727Dt (1) or (b) non-spherical particles of max. size defined by eqn. 2. DP = 6(VP/SP) (2). DP = dia. of spherical (III) (inch); VSD = superficial velocity at design inlet conditions (ft/sec); VLB = laminar burning velocity of mixt. (ft/sec); Dt = dia. of packed tube (inch); VP = vol. of non-spherical (III); SP = surface area of non-spherical (III) (inch2). The pref. (I) is NH3, added in concn. at least 15% by vol. in (II). (II) pref. has O2 concn. at least 25%. Pref. during the reaction a temp. moderating material comprising H2O is added to the packed bed to keep the temp. below the autoignition temp. (esp. 0.5-0.9 tons/ton of NH3). Pref. (III) are non-combustible and opt. endothermic, esp. ceramics, gravel, sand, glass beads, limestone or mixts. With NH3, the mixt. is then pref. passed to a packed bed of oxidation catalyst, when the produced heat is removed or recovered from the oxidised material via a downstream waste heat boiler system. Oxidised material (i.e. N oxides) is pref. condensed in the presence of H2O to afford HNO3. |
