Benzimidazoles of the formula in which n and q are 1 or 2, R<1> is hydrogen, chlorine or methyl, R<2> is hydrogen, optionally substituted C1-C4-alkyl, halogen, nitro or C1-C4-alkanoyl, L is C2-C6-alkylene and An<(-)> is the equivalent of an anion, electrostatic toners containing the benzimidazoles as charge stabilisers, and the use of the benzimidazoles at charge stabilisers.
