1492387 Valves E S LICHTENSTEIN 6 Sept 1974 [7 Sept 1973] 53525/76 Divided out of 1492386 Heading F2V [Also in Divisions G1 and F1] Apparatus for ciculating and treating fluids comprises a pair of plastics sheets joined together in a first pattern of interconnected channels and chambers, one of the sheets being flexible and the other being rigid, and a third sheet joined to said flexible sheet in a second pattern defining at least one pressurizable passage, which closes a channel between the pair of sheets, and a pressurizable compartment which overlies a chamber between the pair of sheets, the combination of the passage and the channel functioning as a valve and pressurization of the compartment serving to expel fluid from the chamber through a channel and thus functioning as a pump. Fluid, e.g. blood, may be drawn from a conduit, e.g. in a dialyser unit into a cylinder 31 through a hypodermic needle 33, on withdrawal of an apertured piston 36, and thence flow into a pair of chambers 27, 128 for receiving a sample via a conduit 38 and containing a reagent, respectively. On pressurizing the overlying compartment 47, the sample and the reagent in chambers 27, 128 are discharged into a reaction chamber 27 for the appropriate test. A reservoir 58 provided with a window 59 and connected with the reaction chamber permits the performance of light tests. Valves in the channels for filling and emptying the sample and reagent chambers comprise separate passages 44, 46 crossing the channels and supplied with air under controlled pressure. The reagent is sealed in its chamber by a breakable seal or contained in the chamber in a bag with a breakable seal. A porous filter 139 and a plug 141 impregnated with a clotting agent, may be disposed upstream of the sample receiving chamber 27. A pair of electrodes, a thermocouple or other conducting members may be sealed in or on the walls of a channel or chamber for measuring the conductivity, temperature or capacitance of the fluid therein. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,434,786. |
