To halve the number of correlations used to determine the correct timing relationship (chip position) of sequences generated at the receiving end, an acquisition method is used which also uses RA (Rapid Acquisition) sequences (RAS). At the transmitting end, the signals are multiplied by a Q (quadriphase) RA sequence (QRAS), which is generated from the RA sequence (RAS). At the receiving end, the signals are correlated with Q sequences (QS) which are generated there. Depending on the respective correlation result, the Q sequences (QS) of the receiver are cyclically shifted and correlated with the QRA sequence (QRAS) until the correct timing relationship is determined. When the QRA sequence (QRAS) and the Q sequence (QS) are generated, in each case one pair of symbols (1, -1) of the RA sequence (RAS) is allocated in each case to in each case one unit value (1, -1, j, -j) of the complex plane. <IMAGE>
